Standing tall with grace and dignity,
conifers are evergreen trees that have a classic
conical shape. Their upright and straight trunks
have branches that grow horizontal to the ground
and have lengths that gradually decrease as they
reach the top of the tree. Trees or shrubs, the
conifer family is one that inspires respect for
its strength and reliability and one of its types,
the Sequoia, has been around for more than 290
million years.
There are many varieties,
some being Juniper, Fir, Yew, Pine, Cedar, Larch,
Cypress, Sequoia and others, all of which look
grand perennially. For bonsai enthusiasts, the
Japanese Pine works well for this grows at a snail's
pace and can be pruned and trained to match a
Zen outlook in a beautiful container.
This pine will slowly grow to about 80 ft if transferred
to the ground.
Conifers that droop their branches
are some varieties like Weeping Cypress, and Norway
spruce and these look better as they age. Being
of the deciduous family, the spruce branches spread
out wide and even at a modest height of 5-½
ft. will pan out double. A Deodar cedar conifer
also bows and grows up to approximately 27 ft.
These trees look graceful and demur.
Not all conifers are imposing
and grand like the Giant Sequoia. For smaller
gardens, there are varieties like Hinoki, often
referred to as untrue pines for they grow only
to about 8 ft. or so. Other dwarf conifers are
some yews that only make it to about 4 or 5 ft.
in height. Cypress trees thrive in weather that
is hot but not too wet. Dwarf varieties of conifers
can be put into containers and shifted to spots
whenever the slant of the sun alters with the
changing of the seasons. Overall, these evergreens
can be trusted to contribute grandeur to any garden
all year round.
