A good fertilizer program is imperative
for a lush, green and healthy lawn. Fertilizing
promotes new growth, controls weeds, aids recovery
from damage caused by foot traffic, and replaces
nutrients lost due to leaching. Lawn fertilizers
come in three basic types: synthetic quick-release;
natural or organic slow-release; and a novel slow-release
hybrid form that combines both synthetic and natural
ingredients.
1. Ensure that you
do not flood your lawn with water. Use a sprinkler
so that all sections get even wetting. If you
squelch while walking in the grass then there
is too much water there and this compacts the
soil denying air to the grass roots. Also, plan
slopes so that excess water can drain off your
patch of green. Try and water in the cool of the
day - early morning or late evening.
2. Mowing your lawn too close
to the ground will expose the roots and encourage
weeds and insects. In summer these roots may also
burn so leave the cut grass for protection and
added organic fertilizing. A regular cutting of
the grass will keep the thickness and height of
the lawn just right. A good lawn mower is vital
to a great looking lawn.
3. Check the grass for signs of
yellow or dry patches. Remove these and replant
the bald patches with extra grass that grows on
the edges of the lawn. If this gets out of hand,
use an insecticide or fungicide on the problem
areas.
4. For a lush green cover with
broader blades of grass, fertilize your lawn with
a strong nitrogen based fertilizer. Recent studies
show that herbicides are very effective in keeping
away weeds and rough grasses from spoiling the
lawn. Like other plants and trees, end summer
and early spring are good times to add this fertilizer.
