Tips For Watering Your Lawn

When watering your lawn, make sure the water sprinkler covers a large area at a slow place to ensure the soil has enough time to absorb the water. Two types of sprinklers available are the fan sprinklers and the rotary ones. Freeman advocates the rotary sprinkler which he says covers more area and sprays the water in a uniform fashion.

Peep into your neighbor's garden. If your neighbor's grass is greener than yours, turn on the sprinklers! What we mean is, if your grass is of an unhealthy blue or ash gray color, it's time to water your lawn.

Generally, you will require ½" to ¾" of water on your lawn, depending on the type of soil in your garden. A simple way to gauge this would be to place a glass on the grass. Water your lawn for around half an hour and then measure the water collected in the glass. You can easily determine how much more time (or less) your garden needs to be watered.

Early to bed, early to rise has another faithful follower. Early morning is the best time of day to water your lawn. However, if you are unable to do it for whatever reason, the next best option would be to do it in the early evening. Two or three times a week is usually enough, but take care not to be over enthusiastic. Over saturation can be detrimental.

Drip irrigation system is one of the best low-volume options, as it can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

Micro jet systems come with a plastic tube, stake and other attachments for various spraying patterns. However, if you prefer economical, the soaker hose is the best choice, as it penetrates slowly into the soil.

Apart from insulating the soil and keeping your plants cool, mulch also aids in slowing down the evaporation of water.
