Gardening is surely not the cheapest
of hobbies. However, you may practice 'smart'
gardening whereby you may save a few dollars.
The rule of thumb in gardening is not to throw
away waste products, for they may in fact prove
to be the elements that provide absolute nourishment
to your garden.
Dried leaves, for
instance, are extremely beneficial for your garden
- so DO NOT let them go waste. Sustenance for
your plants may be found in the form of dried
leaves. In fact, dried leaves if tilled back into
the soil, helps to improve the quality soils which
have a high content of clay and sandy. When laying
out the leaves on the bed of the soil, make an
even layer of about 3 to 6 inches, and then use
a tiller to blend it in. Leaves are also especially
nutritious for your grass. So, once you have collected
the dried leaves, they may be used as a source
for organic mulching; in fact, to this organic
mulch you may even add lawn clippings and food
refuse.
So, the lesson to be learned is
that you should be raking in those leaves and
stacking them in your compost bins! Collecting
leaves may be an arduous task, however the benefits
are plentiful for your garden. Numerous instruments
are available in the markets that help in making
this process somewhat easier. Firstly, you should
equip yourself with a good rake - one that is
light and one that features a long handle and
wide twines. Secondly, you need to choose a storage
device in which to place the leaves. The Home
Depot sports a handy 30 gallon paper bag, which
is both sturdy and may be decomposed. Alternatively,
there is the Fiskars Kangaroo Garden container
or the scarecrow leaf-stuffing kits, which may
be more to your liking.
