General Landscape Design Introduction

There is no one magic mantra for successful landscaping. While there is utmost freedom to choose your landscape design and choice of plants, there are however, some key points one has to bear in mind. You have to basically plan each step of your gardening.

Plan your space: Space has to be planned according to the shape and size of your garden plot. If you want the feeling of space, then one way of achieving it would be to cover a major part of the area with turf and surround it with trees and flowering plants. If you have a large area then you are free to put many elements together.

Plan for gardening apparatus access: The lawn mower is an indispensable tool in the garden. Spacing of plants in the garden should be carefully done so that the mower has easy access to all parts of the lawn. You may also need other equipment to come in when you are doing a makeover. So plan in advance so that you do not have to pull out anything.

Plan the Hardscape: Hardscaping includes all masonry work such as construction of patios, bars, and barbeques and stonewalls and works for any water body in the garden. If you want low garden lights you need to work out the details for that too. These are going to be permanent structures in your garden and it would mean a lot of money and heartbreak if you have to pull it down due to bad planning. So plan this aspect carefully so that these elements are in cohesion with the other elements in the garden.

Choosing your Softscape: Planning the softscape for the garden is an immensely enjoyable, yet challenging task. First choose the type of grass you want for the lawn. You can then embark on choosing the trees you want. Flowering trees are an obvious choice. You can also add a fruit trees. You can create a tree-shaded leisure area with garden furniture. Then you can go ahead and choose the flowering plants, borders and green foliage. Placement of plants cannot be overemphasized as poorly placed plants may require frequent pruning, which may lead to pest infestation.

Bring life into your garden: Add color to your garden. There is a lot you can choose from nature - from bird of paradise plants to mauve verbena, red hibiscus and many more. This will naturally bring in birds and butterflies into the garden. You can add bamboo and ornamental grasses in your garden, which move in the breeze and bring life to your garden with their soft rustling sounds.

Do not overdo: Your garden should complement your house. Choose plants that blend with the house. Avoid overgrown shrubbery at any cost as it can give the garden a cluttered and untidy look.
