Sarah Johnson's family requires
a space that embodies all the essential elements
of a fairy garden - one that engenders a sense
of peace, one that may be used for entertaining,
one where vegetables may be grown and finally
one where the children may play! This will article
will show you the steps we took to transform the
Johnson's garden into a multi-purpose space -
which serves many functions and yet is fanciful
in nature.
The key to the layout
of this garden entails the creation of distinct
areas: a patio, a play area and a vegetable garden.
A curved space is constructed for the patio using
concrete slabs and sand, intermingled with plants
to fill the open spaces. The patio is skillfully
positioned so as to hide the somewhat unseemly
air-conditioning unit. Further character is lent
to the patio by framing it with a lattice arbor
and cleverly fashioned topiaries. Finally, the
patio is equipped with new furniture.
The vegetable patch is organized
and cordoned off in one area of the garden. This
area is made distinct by being stationed on a
raised bed of soil. By clearly demarcating this
space, its protection from the children is ensured
and also allows for the maximum reception of sunlight.
Final touches are added to the
garden, which include fairy ornaments - statues
and birdbaths. The clematis is maneuvered through
a curved lattice support to give the impression
of floating vines. Bovhsow suggests that vines
such as jasmine and sweet pea may be used as substitutes
for clematis. Landscape designers would also recommend
sprinkling the garden with gentle flowering plants,
lavender and a red floribunda tree rose, which
lovingly spread their magic across the Johnson's
garden.
