Create Your Own White Wonder Garden

A whiter shade of pale for a garden can, most surprisingly, be as beautiful as one that runs amok with a riot of color. Far from looking bland, whites range in subtle and mysterious shades from pure pristine to a gentle, baby-sage color that creeps into blooms and variegated leaves. More than just the aesthetic look of a white garden, the illusion of space and a larger area in use can outweigh the loss of bright blooms.

White blooms and plants come alive in the shade and since the distinction in the basic white can be so engagingly delicate and often transparent, they need to be planted in groups for greater effect. Sarah and Chris Johnson discovered the delight of just such a theme on their visit to a castle in England. Bringing this back to their yard made the color white more visually compelling and brought them a rewarding garden.

Apart from the intricate shades of white, the texture and height of such plants should be considered before opting for such a garden. Groups of delicate ferns complement and daintily point to the shy violets that peep out and White Nancy plants that so loves the shadows. Crotons that have white veins beautifully complement and lead the eye onto clusters of ballerinas and bellflowers. Root vegetables such as onions and garlic have white flowers and these added to a fragrant herb section, further extend the range of white. Kathy used lungwort, mint and mock Solomon's seal to add variety to this part of the garden.

Achieving a constant white look, plants and flowers that blossom consecutively using both seasonal and perennial types, were carefully selected and laid out. The plan of the landscape was Don's contribution and this was a golf-related theme with mounds and grassy knolls. Candytufts and woodruff, hostas and iris, and many more varieties, all went into making this unusual effort a breath-taking, white-on-white garden.
