Emerging Trends in Garden Design

"Bigger, the better" need not be the mantra in making your garden the most attractive in the neighborhood. Large gardens have the space to accommodate a number of structural features, yes, but medium and small-sized need not have to settle for anything less attractive. Your gardener might not have the time to construct an arbor or a gazebo, so climbing plants are out of the question.

So what can be the center of attraction in your garden if not an architectural element? Plants, of course. Experts advise that you use specimen plants - any plant that has an unusual shape or color or mannerism will do the trick. This will be the first feature in your garden to catch the viewer's eye, so the point of placement is very important. You can experiment with a couple of ideas before you choose what would be the best suited to your garden and the background, i.e., the wall color. You can choose a single-color multi-shaded pattern for the classy, sober look or a pattern with contrasting colors for the bold look. A few tips have been given below:

  • For warm or shady areas, choose a plant with big, bright leaves like croton.
  • Mix a bunch of plants that come in a wide array of colors and shapes like coleus to create a dramatic effect. For a bushy appearance, cut the stem ends.
  • If you want to change the display every now and then, choosing potted plants would be a wise option.

It offers you range and the option to have a different looking garden every few weeks.
Another tip to remember is to prune dead or dying blossoms regularly, so that the plants keep blooming. Also use a small water feature and clever landscaping lighting to add to the overall effect.
