Theme Gardening - Make Your Garden Special

Like weddings and parties, themes for gardens also, can boost the success of the project in more ways than one. Besides helping in focusing while planning, the idea in itself can be very engaging and exciting. It takes the visitor on a journey of imagination and child-like pleasure is gifted when such theme gardens are created.

Picking a storyline such as the Enchanting forest, Alice-in-wonderland, Wizard-of-Oz or even using the shady nooks and corners of trees and shrubs to hint at lurking fairies, adds charm and wonder to a garden. Gardening professional Rosalind Creasy underscores theme gardens and gives credit to her niece for the fairy garden that she once created. Commencing this fun and light-hearted project, Creasy used the names of flowers and plants with the word 'fairy' as a point or reference. Blossoms such as the foxglove variety called Apricot Fairy Queen, Fairy geraniums and snapdragons, Elfin thyme and impatiens and fuchsia Fairy Earrings, grew as if touched by magic. Adding fruit bushes like berries and strawberry plants that are both ornamental and edible, can lend a welcome feature. Delightful creatures like birds, bees and butterflies, that are so much a part of any garden are so easily lured here thus completing the theme with ease.

Then again, with such a theme, the size of the paths, benches, even a swing if used, should all be kept in sync. Flowerbeds and potted plants can be fairy sized with tiny labels for names if required. A small stream of water can be made to disappear behind a few rocks or a hillock of grass. Fragrance is an important part of such a garden and blossoms that excel at this should be in abundance.

A final touch could be dwarf or fairy statues that seem to appear out of unsuspecting places. Such a garden will never be without the laughter of children and their friends, the flutter and song of birds and the enchanting dance of bees and butterflies in this fairyland of a garden.
