A paved area is a must in a garden
and its purposes are multifold. Firstly, the pavers
provide an area for lounging around and tables
and chairs may be placed here rather than on the
grass. Secondly, it is an area, which will be
weed free, finally adding to the color and texture
of your garden.
If you already have
a backyard, which already comprises a brick patio
and dining table but are looking for ways by which
they may extend this space so that they may entertain
larger gatherings this article is for you. A great
suggestion, which include the construction of
a flagstone seating area and patio in the corner
of the backyard; this, in turn, would entail stripping
off several rose bushes and disposing the gravel.
First draw out a plan of how the
flagstone patio should shape up. It will take
a couple of days to pull off the project, and
the cost of the materials for the flagstone area
and a 10-12 inch stone wall would amount to roughly
$1200.
The first thing you need to do
is prepare the site. The corner of the yard is
cleared of the gravel and other impediments, and
efforts are taken to level the ground. Susie,
in turn, marks off the area with a rope to demarcate
the area for the short stone wall to skirt the
flagstone patio.
The next step is that of placing
the flagstone, dig in and arrange the tiles in
an attractive fashion. To link the existing brick
patio with the new flagstone patio, a narrow path
is created using flagstone. A sense of continuity
is further lent by extending the path right up
to the house.
After attention has been paid to the flooring
of the patio, efforts are directed towards erecting
a stone wall in the corner of the yard. The stone
wall will function both as a seating area and
a holding area for displaying plants. For erecting
the stone wall, sand is poured in a big dug trench.
Once the foundation has been laid, layers of stone
and mortar are used to assemble a stone wall.
The final layer of the stone wall is composed
of flat pieces of flagstone that are shaped to
closely fit the top of the wall.
Final touches are added to the
garden. The garden is dressed up with an assortment
of easy to maintain green plants. The area is
sprinkled with grasses and plants such as flax,
lavender and Irish moss. Colored cushions and
pots are placed in and around the patio; and directly
behind the stone wall, a water feature, in the
form of a copper fountain, is placed whose soothing,
trickling sounds are quintessential to the ambience
of this garden.
