Great Designer Lanscape Ideas: Perk Up Your Flower Beds

If you are confronted with a garden which needs some perking up, here are some handy tips. Survey the garden and make a note of the lawn and the flower beds. While, the lawn can be punched up by using good organic compost and fertilizer, the flower beds will need some of your imagination. A creative flower bed catches every body's attention and reflects your inventive bent of mind.

At the outset, remove any unhealthy looking plants from the roots. Giving a border to the bed is a good idea. You can select suitable stones, bricks or rocks to edge the bed which makes the bed look neat. If need be you can curve the edges to make it look more interesting. A trench can be dug to set the stones so that they are immobilized in it and they also look more natural this way.

Then plan the beds in a manner that taller flowering plants are at the back and lower ones are in the front. Tall flowering plants such as hollyhocks, sunflower and gladioli create a beautiful background for your bed. You can choose the same plants for one bed and mix and match for the other. This is left to your imagination and aesthetic sense. Keep in mind that the colors complement each other. For instance, if you mix reds and oranges, the contrast is absent and hence their individual colors are not highlighted. Combining flowers like zinnias and chrysanthemum or candytuft enhance the beauty of the bed s these flowers complement each other. You can keep a separate bed for annuals, so that you do not disturb the perennials. Or plant annuals on the outer side, so that when the season is over you do not disturb the other plants. This way the bed is also never empty. You can play around with plants on paper, before you actually plant them to get the desired visual appeal.

Over a period of time, you can add other elements such as driftwood or a focus light to give the bed the extra edge.
