The joy of a garden in full bloom
is underscored when many hues and colors co-exist
in floral harmony. Planning and designing is vital
and points like color scheme, design and layout
of the beds, heights and textures of plants, lawn
positioning and fountains, among other features,
needs to be carefully considered.
The pleasure of viewing
seasonal flowers more than makes up for the effort
and physical discomfort that yearly planting entails.
When planting season comes around, the unending
range and blending of colors that these flowers
put out, makes for an interesting and challenging
exercise in co-ordination. Transfer your thoughts
on paper with crayon daubs of color for a first,
rough sketch. Scrapbook work, like pasting color
photos or magazine visuals of the flowers you
want can be next. You can even get professional
and measure the size of beds and draw this to
scale in your plan. The following hints can make
a progressive difference.
1. Plant tall plants at the rear, next those of
medium height and then shorter ones up front.
Island beds could have tall plants in the center
gradually sloping down in height, all around.
Enclose this in a low, green border for effect
and neatness.
2. Since annuals allow wider choice with respect
to color and type, plant a two-toned or tri-color
garden one spring. This will help focus and narrow
your choice. Experiment with a purple and pink
combo or a yellow, blue and white combination
that involves many types of flowers of similar
shades.
3. Use different characteristics like spiky, airy
and feathery flowers such as Indian paintbrush,
Capers, Cornflower or Lady Lace together with
fuller flowers such as Salvia, Petunias, Calendulas
or Poppies, to blend with tiny flower heads like
Daisies or Garden Geraniums.
4. Lastly, taking off flowers that are two or
three day old blooms, will encourage the plants
to increase flower production hence giving your
garden, a continuously fresh and young look.
